One of the easiest traps in marketing is focusing too heavily on the moment somebody is ready to buy.
Of course, that moment matters. But what about everything that happens before it?
Consumers can spend months researching, watching, reading and forming opinions before they make a decision. In property, that journey can be particularly long – and it extends far beyond buying or selling a home.
People are thinking about where they live, how they live and what they might do next all the time.
And that creates a significant opportunity for property and home-related brands.
Be useful before you need to sell
At Move iQ, much of the content we create for consumers isn’t built around an immediate transaction.
We talk about buying, selling and renting, but also home improvements, mortgages, energy efficiency, later-life decisions, market changes and the practical realities of owning and living in a home.
The common thread is simple: is this something our audience will find useful?
That approach matters because useful content can reach somebody long before they need a particular product or service.
A homeowner researching ways to make their property more energy efficient may not be ready to invest today. A renter watching advice about their rights isn’t necessarily about to move. Someone exploring ways to improve their kitchen might be months away from starting a project.
But they’re interested.
And they’re paying attention.
Familiarity has value
Not every piece of content needs to generate an immediate lead to be doing something valuable.
Good content can introduce a brand, demonstrate expertise and create familiarity.
Someone sees your brand alongside a useful video. Later, they encounter it within a podcast discussion. Months afterwards, they see it associated with another piece of advice relevant to them.
By the time they actually need the product or service, that brand is no longer unfamiliar.
That’s particularly valuable in property and the home, where many decisions involve significant amounts of money, research and trust.
Don’t turn every piece of content into an advert
This is where brands sometimes get content wrong.
If every appearance is focused on the product, offer or call to action, audiences quickly recognise that they’re being sold to.
There’s another way.
Start with the consumer question or subject and work backwards.
What does somebody genuinely want to understand? What expertise can your business bring to that conversation? Where can you add something useful without needing to dominate it?
At Move iQ, we’ve found that brands can sit very naturally within consumer content when there’s a genuine connection between their expertise and the subject being discussed.
The brand still gets visibility, but the audience gets something worthwhile in return.
Think beyond your own audience
There’s also a limit to continually talking to the people who already follow you.
Your own website, database and social channels are important, but partnerships and third-party media can introduce your expertise to people you may not otherwise reach.
That might be through a video series, podcast, expert contribution, property content or a wider media collaboration.
And good partnership content shouldn’t exist in isolation.
It can be shared through your own channels, incorporated into email campaigns, shared on social media and used as part of a wider content strategy.
One conversation can create multiple opportunities to be seen.
Think about the relationship, not just the conversion
Ultimately, content gives brands an opportunity to start the relationship earlier.
You won’t always know when somebody watching is going to need you.
And that’s the point.
If you consistently appear in useful, relevant conversations, you can build recognition before commercial intent exists.
Your next customer may not be ready to buy today. Good content gives them a reason to remember you when they are.
